Currently in Philadelphia at PlayPenn working on a deeply personal play of mine called Tha Chink-Mart. It's been a little over a year since the last workshop of this play and it's been great to revisit these characters and themes. Not only that, what's very unique about this go around is that it's the first time I'm on a team that is virtually ALL Asian (SM, intern, dramaturg, included). This experience has been very emotional. To see an all Asian cast is one thing, but to have this level of intrinsic understanding of the material and support for all the artists in the room literally brought me to tears. The rehearsal room is so alive and beautiful, I want to live in it forever. I'm very excited to share this work, especially with Asian Americans. If you can, definitely come check out the readings on the 17th or the 27th! Even if they are sold out, waitlisters have a near definite chance of getting in (apparently, only once did PlayPenn turn away a patron in their 15+ years). Hopefully you can make it!
I also had the great privilege of seeing Skeleton Crew at People's Light Theater (courtesy of our incomparable dramaturg, Gina Pisasale). Wonderful production with incredible acting and beautiful design elements. I'm constantly struck by Dominique Morisseau's flourish with language. She has a very poetic touch that is still grounded in naturalism that I aspire to. Furthermore, she is premiering a show called Mud Row with this company next summer so if you're around, definitely see that.
One thing I clocked was how old and white the audience in this theatre was. This is nothing new, but it reminded me about RE:'s mission and how the struggle to diversify the theatre audience is a long and arduous one.
I have a bunch of scenes I need to tweak in the next few days but hopefully I'll be able to fit in a dope ass cheesesteak somewhere in between. I bought one from some diner near where I'm currently staying and it did it's job of easing the alcohol into my stomach (this was an emergency cheesesteak), but now I need a REAL one.
The journey continues...
